There are many different types of jobs available in the service. For each, there are entry requirements and they vary from job-to-job. Most jobs require a mix of educational qualifications, work experience and personal attributes.
We hire a broad range of people
Teachers, police officers, researchers, policy makers - there are so many different types of meaningful jobs in the service. And we need an equally broad range of people from diverse backgrounds to add their very own special touch to these jobs.
When it comes to qualifying for these jobs, educational qualifications isn't the only thing that we look for. Work experience, character, motivations, commitment to the service, initiative, interpersonal skills and job fit are just as important.
We are prepared to turn away someone with outstanding grades if they do not have the right personal attributes for the job; and especially when they do not have any real passion and desire to serve our nation.
We welcome people from different disciplines
Given the range of jobs available, the Service needs people from various disciplines: arts, business, law, engineering or science. We do not have an underlying or overarching preference for particular disciplines.
Educational or professional qualifications come into play only when it is required or needed as part of the job function. Lawyers must have law degrees and be qualified to practice. The same applies to doctors and other specialist professions.
We want to find the best person for the job
Whether entry-level or mid-career job, it is always about finding the best person - we want to have a Service filled with engaged officers working together.
When candidates have little or no experience, we'll look at their personal attributes and educational qualifications to determine if they would do well in the job, especially for entry-level positions.
Likewise, when we're looking at a candidate with tons of relevant work experience for a mid-level position, we might place a lot less emphasis on educational qualifications.
We believe the process should be open and meritocratic

The best person is one who the necessary competencies, skills, experience, credentials and personal qualities needed to excel in the job.
Your career progression is based on ability
When you first join us, your work experience, skills, education and personal attributes determine your grade.
After that, your progress will be based on your performance, personal attributes and ability to take on more or greater responsibilities. Progression is not based on seniority, nationality or any other factors.
Your career pathways are based on your job
Some jobs in the Public Service have fixed career pathways, others do not due to the nature of the work.
Agencies like IRAS also offer two main progression pathways: one for tax specialists and another for managers. MOE has different pathways for teachers, allied educators and executives.
